Alpha channel
Also known as alpha mask, alpha channel masking. Category: 360, 3D and output formats
An alpha channel is an additional channel in an image that stores the opacity of each pixel, from fully transparent to fully opaque. It allows soft, partially transparent edges, for example on hair or glass, which a hard clipping path cannot represent.
How PhotoRobot uses it
PhotoRobot's glossary articles describe automatic alpha channel masking replacing manual vector clipping paths in automated workflows. In PhotoRobot exports, transparency is kept in PNG and WebP files.
Related terms
- Transparent background: An image whose background pixels are transparent, so the product can be placed on any colour or layout.
- Clipping path: A hand-drawn vector outline used to cut a product out of its background.
- Background removal: Separating the product from its background so it can be placed on pure white or transparency.
- PNG: A lossless image format that supports transparency; larger files than JPEG.
